Acura MDX or Honda MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV that has been produced since 2001 by the Japanese automaker Acura. Acura MDX was first of its kind that has had the third-row seating. The MDX is pretty much similar to Honda Pilot. The MDX is an acronym for ‘Multi-Dimensional Luxury’. The MDX is manufactured by Honda of Canada Manufacturing Ltd in its facility located in Alliston, Ontario, Canada. The MDX was launched in 2000 as 2001 year model and it replaced the slow-selling US only body-on-frame SLX based on Isuzu Trooper.
When the production of Honda Horizon was ceased in 1999, the MDX took its place to fill up the gap. Initially, MDX was offered in Japanese and Australian markets. The 2001-2003 Touring ‘Kiwi’ style wheels along with the Rear-seat DVD entertainment system featured in all the Australian MDXs models. Acura took the initiative in 2009 so as to manufacture a crossover slightly above the MDX in its specs in the form of ZDX – a four-door coupe looks similar to BMW X6 and Honda Crosstour.
First Generation (2001–2006)
The first generation Honda MDX is based on Honda’s Global mid-size platform sharing it with the vehicles including Honda Accord, Acura TL, Acura TSX and Honda Odyssey. The Honda MDX gets a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 with VTEC. The 2001-2002 models get 3.5 V6 engine producing 240 hp (180 kW) and 245 lb·ft (332 Nm) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. The 2003-2006 models receive 3471 cc (3.5 in x 3.6 in) model engine producing 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb·ft (343 Nm). The MDX has a curb weight of 4451 lb (2,019 kg) along with a 106.3-inch (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8-inch (200 mm) of ground clearance. The MDX can accommodate 7 passengers at a time.
Second Generation (2007–Present)
Acura exhibited the 2007 Acura MDX Concept version at the New York International Auto Show in April 2006. The idea was to show the people what Acura is aiming to bring for its customers in the forthcoming entirely restored MDX in terms of its exterior styling. The same year October 17, the second generation MDX was revealed in the United States.
The second generation MDX gets an upgraded engine, i.e. a 3.7 liter V6 tuned for 300 hp (220 kW) and 275 lb·ft (373 Nm) of torque. The car sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 6 seconds. The estimated EPA rating possessed by car is 15 miles per US gallon (16 L/100 km) in the city and 20 miles per US gallon (12 L/100 km) on the highway. The engine that second generation MDX got has known to be one of the Honda’s most powerful engine.
During the years from 2007 to 2009, the MDX was offered in three optional packages including the Technology package, the Sport package and the Entertainment package.
The 2010 model of MDX gets a facelift and the most prominent upgrade in the 2010 model is the introduction of a new 6-speed SportShift automatic transmission.
